I tried a new tactic in advertising my Justin Duchscherer baseball card want list. I posted an "auction" on eBay that is not really an auction. It is merely a way to get my want list out to more people. You can view the eBay listing here. The listing has generated some emails, but all the cards offered are cards I already have in my collection. However, I have heard back from two individuals who may have several non-1/1 cards. It has been slow going, though, in my communication with them. I expected to have a couple deals wrapped up by now, so it has been a little frustrating. Still, I'm optimistic one or more deals will come through shortly, and I will have some awesome additions to the collection.
I did receive the 1990 Roundball Press Set that I purchased on eBay. That set includes the only solo card of Hank Gathers (#15 of 15 in the set). The set is not recognized by Beckett because it was not a licensed product. The cards themselves are rather flimsy (not proper cardboard stock), but they have good eye appeal. Here is the front and back of the Hank Gathers card. The picture used was a photo of Hank Gathers in a Sports Illustrated issue during the winter of 1989-90. Even though 10,000 sets were made, the sets are actually quite rare. I have only seen maybe five or six sets sold online in the last 10 years or so. From what I have been told, most of the 10,000 sets were not produced or destroyed due to the lack of licensing. I now have three copies of the Hank Gathers card, and I will probably trade off the rest of the set.
As for further collecting goals, my daughter was born in 2011, so I will be putting together some sets from that year. Those sets will be fun to look back on over time. I will also be putting together the 1951 Bowman baseball set (the year my father was born). That will be a much bigger project, but it should be a lot of fun to have some vintage maildays!
